Katie Smye

Dr. Katie Smye is a research associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin. She is primarily known for leading integrated research efforts across a range of disciplines including analysis and mitigation of induced seismicity, reservoir response to large-scale injection, and resource assessment. Katie co-leads the Center for Injection and Seismicity Research (CISR), an industrial associates program conducting research on water injection capacity challenges with a focus on the Permian Basin region. Katie’s previous program leadership experience includes a DOE-funded project to provide oil- and gas-in-place evaluations to the Energy Information Administration to underpin projections of U.S. oil and natural gas supply, and a GWPC-funded project to assess the sustainability of wastewater injection in the Permian Basin.

Katie has a PhD in earth sciences from the University of Cambridge and bachelors degrees in geology and chemistry from the University of Oklahoma. She has authored or co-authored 30 peer-reviewed scientific publications and has established a reputation as a leader in the field of injection-induced seismicity, speaking at conferences, communicating science to the public in media interviews, and developing productive collaborations in academia, regulatory agencies and industry. She serves as an Associate Editor of AAPG Bulletin, is on the organizing committee for the biannual SPE/SEG induced seismicity workshop, and plays an active role in convening and chairing conference sessions on induced seismicity and related topics.
